Winx safely delivers Pierro filly

The owners of Winx (Street Cry {Ire}) were celebrating the birth of the champion mare's first foal, a filly by Coolmore Stud's Pierro, who arrived healthy and well on Friday night.

“The Tighe, Kepitis and Treweeke families are ecstatic to announce that the future champion we've all been waiting for has arrived," Winx's owners said in a statement.

“Both mum and foal are healthy and doing very well. Thank you to the amazing team who have cared for Winx and her filly throughout this journey. We wish Winx all the best as she starts this new chapter as a super mum.”

The mating with Pierro was Winx's second attempt at motherhood, having lost her foal by I Am Invincible in the spring of 2020.

Saracen Knight to swerve Caulfield Cup

The Danny O'Brien-trained Saracen Knight (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) continued his resurrection as a stayer with a strong performance to land the G2 Herbert Power S. at Caulfield on Saturday.

The winner of the Group 2 is normally exempt from the ballot for next week's G1 Caulfield Cup, but as Saracen Knight was never among the original nominations, he now waits a further week for his spring grand final in the G2 Moonee Valley Cup.

"When the Melbourne and Caulfield Cups nominations closed we thought it was a bridge too far from where he was at but we've got a million-dollar Moonee Valley Cup in two weeks' time so I suspect that we'll head there," O'Brien said.

"We'll pick off the races that we can."
