Listed Darley Scone Cup, $200,000, 1600m

The Kris Lees-trained Rustic Steel - a son of Newgate Farm’s Deep Field - stayed on stoutly to land the Listed Scone Cup on Friday.

Purchased by Tasman Bloodstock for $500,000 at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from the Newgate Farm draft, Rustic Steel was adding a seventh race victory to his record and a first at stakes level, providing Deep Field with his 14th individual black-type winner.

The 4-year-old gelding is one of three winners out of the unraced mare Ten Carat Rock (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) and she hails from one of the most successful and active families in the Stud Book.

Ten Carat Rock is herself a sister to Group 3 winner Sliding Cube (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire}) - the dam of Group 2 winner and now Swettenham Stud resident Rubick.

Sliding Cube and Ten Carat Rock are out of blue hen producer Shantha’s Choice (Canny Lad) and she produced nine winners, spearheaded by three Group 1 winners Platinum Scissors, Manhattan Rain and the breed-shaping late stallion Redoute’s Choice.

Shantha’s Choice also produced The Broken Shore (Hussonet {USA}) - the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Shoals (Fastnet Rock) and her stakes-winning brother Groundswell.
