At A Glance

Following on from an outstanding HTBA May Yearling Sale, Weanling Sale and Chairman’s Sale over the previous seven days, Sunday’s Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale continued in a similar vein with solid results across the board.

The Sale finished with 133 mares selling for a total of $8,543,000 at a clearance rate of 78 per cent. A larger catalogue for last year’s Sale saw 180 mares sell for $11,294,600 with an 80 per cent clearance rate.

Sunday’s Sale concluded with an average of $64,233 and a median of $45,000 – almost identical to last year’s figures of $62,748 and $45,000 respectively.

Nine mares cracked the $200,000 mark on Sunday, headed by top lot Tiz My View (Snitzel), who was bought by Team Lucky Vega for $350,000 ahead of a likely mating with Written Tycoon. The mare had been bought for just $15,000 from an Inglis Digital Sale at the same time last year.

Coolmore Stud finished as leading vendor by aggregate, selling 16 mares for a total of $1,291,500 and an average price of $80,719.

All eyes on Tiz My View

Bought for just $15,000 from an Inglis Digital Sale at this time last year, Tiz My View (Snitzel) played a starring role in the 2022 Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale at Riverside Stables on Sunday with a Sale-topping price of $350,000.

Consigned by Coolmore and in foal to Hanseatic, Tiz My View was offered late in the Sale as Lot 679 and was purchased by Team Lucky Vega for a potential mating with superstar Yulong stallion Written Tycoon.

Tiz My View’s stocks have soared in recent weeks through the feats of her 2-year-old filly Bubble Palace (Rich Enuff), who has had two career starts for two super-impressive wins – by 3.5l on debut at Ballarat, and by 3.75l in last week’s VOBIS Gold Strike at Warrnambool.

“With Bubble Palace being by a son of Written Tycoon (Rich Enuff), we bought her as a good physical for Written Tycoon,” Yulong Investments’ Chief Operating Officer Sam Fairgray said.

“With Bubble Palace’s potential in mind, and honestly thinking she could be Group 1 potential, plus the fact that Tiz My View was a lovely physical, we were happy to pay top dollar for her.

“Tiz My View was a fast 2-year-old herself, and hopefully Bubble Palace can go on and get black type, if not be a Group 1 horse, and we can have a nice result with this mare moving forward.”

A daughter of the American black-type placegetter Miss Tizzy (USA) (Cee’s Tizzy {USA}), Tiz My View won twice in a 13-start career, along with three minor placings. She also finished fourth in the Listed Festival of Racing S. at Flemington as a 2-year-old.

Bubble Palace is Tiz My View’s second foal to race and first winner. The exciting filly's older half-sister Tiz My Bay (Cable Bay {Ire}) has placed three times in a nine-start career to date. Tiz My View returned to Cable Bay (Ire) to produce another filly foal in 2020.

Remarkable return for online purchase

Sunday’s Sale-topping result was an incredible feat of pinhooking by Fionnula Timoney, who paid just $15,000 to buy Tiz My View from last year’s Inglis Digital Online May Sale under the banner of Calvados Bloodstock.

“It is unbelievable,” Timoney said. “It hasn’t sunk in yet, I think I’m still in shock.

“Coming into this week, anything over $100,000 I would have been delighted with. I think, if she wasn’t making $100,000, I would have kept her at home and foaled her down.

“It’s unreal. I had my reserve at $80,000, so to have an opening bid of $120,000 was terrific, and to end up where she did – I mean, wow.”

Timoney has now turned her attention to this year’s edition of that same Inglis Digital Sale, which closes on Wednesday.

“I’ll be shopping,” she said. “It’s great, I love the Inglis Online Sales. I’ve been lucky with a few good results, I’ve bought some nice horses from them, and it’s great to get this kind of return, bringing Tiz My View back just a few months later.”

Tiz My View was the highlight lot in a quality draft for Coolmore, who finished as Sunday’s leading vendor by aggregate with 16 mares selling for a total of $1,291,500 with an average price of $80,719.

Snitzels in demand

Daughters of Champion Sire Snitzel were hot property at Riverside Stables on Sunday, fetching three of the four highest prices of the session.

Hard on the heels of Sale-topper Tiz My View was the Newgate Consignment’s Interram (Snitzel), who was bought for $340,000 by Leongatha Property Holdings.

Herself a winner over 1200 metres, Interram is a full sister to the Group 3-placed Spoils (Snitzel). They are both daughters of Fortune Of War (General Nediym), who placed at Listed level and is a half-sister to the stakes winners Sertorius (Galileo {Ire}), Pretty Brazen (Brazen Beau), Dollar For Dollar (High Chaparral {Ire}), Pretty Amazing (American Pharoah {USA}) and Clifton Red (Sebring), along with the Group 1-placegetter Rezealient (Sebring).

Offered in foal to Pierro, Interram was the headline act of a Newgate draft that amassed a total of $986,500 from 12 mares sold.

“Interram is a lovely mare in foal to Pierro and a good sort,” Newgate Farm’s Henry Field said. “It was a good, strong price for her, but it’s been a great day of trade overall.

“It’s been a very, very strong Sale today, and it was wonderful trade at the Chairman’s on Friday night, too, so it just carries on from that.

“I think the format’s been excellent. Inglis has really worked hard to get a great buying bench here – a very strong Weanling Sale into a great Chairman’s event.

“The Chairman’s Sale is now almost an event, more so than a sale, even. It’s a great evening, and everyone enjoyed themselves, and then to finish off today with good, strong trade in the general session.”

The next highest-priced Snitzel mare on Sunday was Lot 672, Kia Ora Stud’s unraced Suzila, who was bought by Boomer Bloodstock (FBAA) for $260,000.

A daughter of the G1 Spinaway S. winner Mani Bhavan (USA) (Storm Boot {USA}), Suzila is a half-sister to the Listed-placed Petrelle (Fastnet Rock) and closely related to black-type performers Mumbai Jewel (I Am Invincible) and Splendoronthegrass (So You Think {NZ}). She is in foal to Headwater.

“She is out of a US Grade 1 winner, from Kia Ora Stud and from a live family,” Boomer Bloodstock tweeted.

Owner celebrates dream result

Kate Gadsby celebrated a career highlight as an owner-breeder with the sale of Ariege (Exceed And Excel) to Paul Moroney and Catheryne Bruggeman for Sunday’s equal second-highest price of $340,000.

It was an outstanding result for Gadsby, who had previously purchased the two-race winner off Godolphin for $70,000 at the 2020 Magic Millions National Broodmare Sale.

“I’m very happy with the price,” Gadsby said. “I’m only a small owner, so it’s great to get a win on occasions.

“I’ve had this mare for two years. I just loved the pedigree when I first saw the mare – I love Exceed And Excel mares. Luckily she was in foal to probably one of the lesser stallions at the time, so I was able to buy her for under $100,000.”

Offered as Lot 513 by Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Ariege is a half-sister to the G3 David Coles S. winner and G2 Thousand Guineas Prelude placegetter Heresy (Street Boss {USA}). The pair are both daughters of Group 3 winner Montsegur (New Approach {Ire}), from the family of the likes of Paulele (Dawn Approach {Ire}), Bonaria (Redoute’s Choice) and Merchant Navy.

Having previously produced filly foals by Shooting To Win in 2020 and Lonhro last year, Ariege is currently in foal to Ole Kirk.

“It’s a fabulous family,” Gadsby said. “There’s so much going on there at the minute, and Ariege still has two Fastnet Rock half-brothers to race, so there’s more to come. I think the purchaser has probably got a lot of upside as well.

“The Shooting To Win filly has been sold to a racing stable (CRT Racing), and I have the Lonhro filly out of the mare, who I’m hoping to get into the Inglis Classic or Melbourne Premier Sale next year.”

Strong trade to end big week

Sunday’s Australian Broodmare Sale provided a strong finish to an exceptional week of Inglis Sales, which have seen a total of $60,501,250 spent over eight days spanning the HTBA May Yearling Sale, the Australian Weanling Sale, the Chairman’s Sale and the Australian Broodmare Sale.

The Australian Broodmare Sale itself concluded with 133 mares selling for a total of $8,543,000. The average was $64,233, the median $45,000 and the clearance rate 78 per cent.

Those figures held up well against last year’s Sale, which had a larger catalogue and achieved an aggregate of $11,294,600 from 180 mares sold. Last year’s average and median were $62,748 and $45,000 respectively, with a clearance rate of 80 per cent.

Inglis Bloodstock CEO Sebastian Hutch said the week had comfortably exceeded expectations.

“It has been fantastic, and while it is a big undertaking to get through yearlings, weanlings and mares in the space of a week, it has worked very well and it is just so efficient for most vendors,” Hutch said.

“We are hugely grateful to the vendors across each of the Sales for their support, and our team has worked hard to ensure that the nature of the service afforded to vendors and buyers is an industry benchmark.

“To have record sales for HTBA May, Australian Weanling and Chairman’s, and then an extremely successful albeit smaller Australian Broodmare Sale today, it really has been an excellent week and one that I think we can continue to develop further.

“The week has demonstrated clearly that there is an appetite for more quality stock at each of these Sales, and those who have been good enough to support the Sales with good horses have been incredibly well rewarded.

“For those who have missed out on securing stock this past week – and that’s a lot of people – I would encourage people to review the passed-in lots, while the current Inglis Digital catalogue has plenty of fillies, mares, yearlings and weanlings. There’s something for everyone there and some exceptionally talented racehorses, so I urge people to jump online and head to inglisdigital.com and inspect that catalogue ahead of Wednesday’s closing.”
