Scissor Kick filly on top on Book 2 at Magics

6 min read
A quality filly by Scissor Kick topped the short first session of Book 2 at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale with All Winners Thoroughbreds paying $300,000 for her from Arrowfield Stud's draft.

At A Glance

Lot 1010, the Scissor Kick filly offered by Arrowfield, landed with Denys Chan's All Winners Thoroughbreds.

Two colts by All Too Hard, Lot 1043 from Vinery Stud, and Lot 1018, from Cressfield, sold for $200,000 and $170,000 respectively.

Suman Hedge and Gerald Ryan came together to buy the brother to promising galloper Ellsberg (Spill The Beans) for $160,000.

The Book 2 average stands at $59,548, below last year's mark of $77,393, but with a much larger catalogue.

Book 2 clearance rate stands at a healthy 80.58 per cent, it was 78.92 per cent in 2020.

The median stands at $45,000, down from $55,000 last year.

The Sale became the first Australian yearling sale to crack to $200 million mark for aggregate sales.

Scissor Kick filly a winner

Denys Chan was the busiest buyer of the session, picking up four lots for a total of $440,000, including the Scissor Kick filly out of Listed-place mare Moonlight Hussey (Hussonet {USA}), from Arrowfield's draft.

Moonlight Hussey is a sister to Group 2 winner Colorado Claire, whose Snitzel colt was sold by Arrowfield Stud earlier this week for $425,000, and who is the dam of G2 Todman S. winner Gunnison (Not A Single Doubt).

The family also includes South African Group 1 winner Soqrat (Epaulette) whose dam is a three-quarter sister to Moonlight Hussey, and Group 2 winner Moonovermanhattan (Manhattan Rain).

Moonlight Hussey has produced four winners from five foals to the track, including the promising 2-year-old True Moonlight (Not A Single Doubt), who is trained by Gillian Heinrich.

Paul Messara said it wasn't surprising that the filly had so many admirers.

"She was a lovely filly by Scissor Kick. She's well related and is from a great family, the family of Gunnison, and Colorado Claire, who we sold one of her progeny by Snitzel earlier in the Sale. She was a fantastic type and those good sorts are well found," he said.

Arrowfield, which was the leading vendor on aggregate in Book 1, led all vendors with more than three sales in Book 2, both on average ($118,825) and gross ($475,500).

"I think the good ones really stand out in Book 2. It can often cause a lot of buyers to come together and there is plenty of competitive tension when they are all on the one horse, that's for sure," Messara said.

All Too easy for quality pair

The progeny of Vinery Stud's All Too Hard was very much in demand, with his four lots selling for a combined $445,000.

The highest-priced All Too Hard on the day was Lot 1043, the colt out of Poppett's Treasure (GB) (Dansili {GB}), which sold for $200,000 to Kacy Fogden.

Poppet's Treasure was stakes-placed in France and has produced three winners, including the two full siblings to this colt, Gentleman's Words and Alshahhad. She is a half-sister to Group 2 winner Overdose (GB) (Starborough {GB}) and Listed winner Majestic Mount (GB) (Exceed And Excel).

The colt was offered by Vinery Stud on behalf of his breeders at Encompass International.

Earlier, another All Too Hard, Lot 1018, out of Nikkirina (Beautiful Crown {USA}), went to Chris Anderson Racing and DGR Thoroughbred Services for $170,000 from the draft of Cressfield.

“Duncan (Ramage) identified this horse on the farm some time ago and it was one he actually said to me, ‘we can’t afford to go home without him’ and we had a little bit more up our sleeve had we had to go harder. He loved the type of horse that he was and the stallion can throw a very, very good horse as well. I am very happy to take him home," Anderson said.

“He is very strong. He is a Duncan Ramage type of horse. He really resonated with him and he was very, very keen to get him.

“Looking at his pedigree so far in terms of who the mare has been to, this is probably her best chance (of success) now, I would have to say, so hopefully that proves to be correct.

“We certainly bid strongly to reflect that, so we were very keen to take him home, that is for sure.”

Brother to join Ellsberg at Ryan's Rosehill stable

Suman Hedge has had a busy Sale, working with the new colts' fund Victorian Alliance, selling a few of his own and buying in his own right, but it was a very nice Spill The Beans colt, Lot 987, offered by KBL Thoroughbreds, that saw him combine with Gerald Ryan to pay $160,000.

The colt's brother, Ellsberg has won two of his five starts and been placed in a G3 Spring S.

"He was a horse that we identified pretty early in the piece as an athlete. I’d seen the videos in the lead-in to the Sale and I was so impressed with his movement," Hedge said.

"He was a horse I was very familiar with because I had tried to buy his brother Ellsberg as a weanling.

"I’d seen how he'd sold so well, so I had followed him closely. I could see he was a horse that was very promising. When I inspected this colt, he was so much a dead ringer for his sire Spill The Beans."

The dam, Love of Liberty (General Nediym) was a metropolitan 2-year-old winner and a sister to Group 3 winner Electric General. Ryan and Sterling Alexiou train Ellsberg, and Hedge approached Ryan to partner in this colt.

"He looks like a really early type and I thought I'd try and put something together. I contacted Gerald Ryan and fortunately, Gerald rated the horse very highly and loved him," he said.

"We combined our efforts and put together a team and were able to buy the horse."

The final day of the Sale begins at 10am on Monday, with the conclusion of Book 2, a short Book 3 and then the Gold Coast Summer Racehorse Sale, which contains 14 lots, 12 of them from Godolphin.
