Looking Ahead - January 13

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we’re expecting Group 1 pedigrees to rise to the top at Warwick Farm where a lightly-tried brother to an international top-flight winner and a son of a four-time elite level heroine loom as top prospects. At Caulfield, a 2-year-old sister to a G1 Golden Rose S. winner has our attention.

The Corumbene Stud-bred and raced Loveland (Not A Single Doubt) is a sister to the G1 HKJC Champions’ Mile winner Not A Single Legend, also a multiple placegetter at the elite level, and their dam Donna’s Appeal (Carnegie {Ire}) was successful on three occasions. She is a daughter of the Listed Gimcrack S. winner Donna Natalia (Anabaa {USA}) with the G1 The Galaxy H. winner and successful sire Charge Forward also a member of this family.

Loveland is prepared by Peter and Paul Snowden and in her only appearance got a long way back from an awkward barrier at Kembla Grange and finished off fairly to run sixth and only 1.5l off the winner. The filly was then given a decent break and ahead of her return has trialled twice and was a quiet fourth in the latest of them for Kerrin McEvoy, who retains the ride.

Sarandos (I Am Invincible) was bought out of Murulla Stud’s draft at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale by trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott for $400,000, who purchased his unraced half-sister Pensera (Pierro) the previous year for $500,000. They are out of the former top-class performer Streama (Stratum), whose 10 career wins featured a quartet at Group 1 level.

Sarandos as a yearling

Off the back of a pair of trials, Sarandos made his first race day appearance at Nowra last month and finished a respectable fourth after jumping from the outside gate. With the benefit of that experience and the inside barrier, he is definitely worth following.

Trainer James Cummings has enjoyed an excellent run with his 2-year-olds this season and that may continue with Alriyah (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}) promising a top first-up performance. She has trialled well in New South Wales before heading to Melbourne and with Damien Oliver in the saddle makes strong appeal.

The filly is a daughter of the G2 Magic Night S. winner Alizes (Rory’s Jester) and her dam La Baraka (Euclase) won the G1 The Galaxy H. Alriyah is a sister to G1 Golden Rose S. winner and sire Astern and a half-sister to G2 Silver Slipper S. winner and sire Tassort and to the dam of the Alizee (Sepoy), successful three times at the highest level.
