Breed-shaping stallion Deep Impact (Jpn) combined with a pair of Group 1-winning Australian mares for a winning double at Newcastle on Tuesday. Both horses sported the black and gold silks of Arrowfield Stud, who co-bred the pair with John Leaver's Planette Thoroughbreds and Alan Jones' Belford Productions with all parties remaining in the ownership.

The 4-year-old Reaching (Deep Impact {Jpn}) shed her maiden tag in the Australian Bloodstock H. for trainer Kim Waugh at her sixth appearance, guided by jockey James McDonald.

The Chris Waller-trained 3-year-old colt Bucharest (Deep Impact {Jpn}), named after the birthplace of the ownership group's late friend and industry figure Nick Columb, continued the ideal start he has made to his career with further success over 1400 metres following his debut win earlier this month, also ridden by McDonald.

Perfect winning stud record

Bucharest is a son of the former champion Australian 2 and 3-year-old Miss Finland (Redoute’s Choice), whose decorated career included wins at Group 1 level in the Golden Slipper S., Australian Guineas, VRC Oaks, Thousand Guineas and the Arrowfield Stud S.

All six of Miss Finland’s foals to race have been successful and include Stay With Me (Street Cry {Ire}), who emulated her dam by winning the Thousand Guineas, and the black-type performers Earth Angel (Animal Kingdom {USA}) and Woodbine (Hussonet {USA}).

The prized gem in the Arrowfield broodmare band, John Messara has given Castelvecchio the ultimate endorsement by sending Miss Finland to him for a visit this breeding season. She foaled a filly by his sire Dundeel (NZ) two weeks ago after missing to I Am Invincible in 2018.

Waugh's mare Reaching has been more of a work in progress, filling minor placings in three of her first four appearances prior to a spell.

She had won a trial before a resuming third at Newcastle and the step up to 1500 metres on Tuesday brought out the best in the daughter of Alinghi (Encosta De Lago).

Former Champion 3-year-old filly Alinghi has a rich Group 1 record that includes victories in the Newmarket H., Blue Diamond S., Thousand Guineas, Swettenham Stud S. She has now produced three winners.

Daughter Line Honours (Hussonet {USA}) is the dam of the Group 3-placed siblings Extra Olives (Redoute’s Choice) and Regatta Rebel (Redoute's Choice). Reaching was Alinghi's final foal.

First win for Moore

Meanwhile, champion horseman John Moore may still be in Hong Kong, but he is on the board with brother Gary with Morethannumberone (More Than Ready {USA}) crediting the training partnership with their first triumph.

In his seventh appearance, the 4-year-old was successful in the Hunter Valley Premium Meats Maiden in the hands of apprentice Louise Day.

A $375,000 purchase out of Kia Ora Stud’s draft at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Morethannumberone is out of Gunawati (Galileo {Ire}), a half-sister to the G3 Blue Diamond Prelude winner One Last Dance (Encosta De Lago).
