Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.
Today, we’re taking a closer look at a pair of lightly-tried maiden contenders at Goulburn and at Geelong we like the chances of a well-related filly, who can show sharp improvement with the benefit of a debut outing.
Goulburn, Race 2, 12.35pm AEST, David Alt Electrical Mdn, $20,000, 1600m
Enduring Night (Stratum) finished in behind the major players in two outings last preparation before a spell. Off the back of a pair of trials, the filly resumed on this course last month over 1300 metres and made late ground for fourth. She was well supported and over a bit more ground it should be worth following the money.
Trained by Jason Coyle, Enduring Night is out of the winning Zabeel (NZ) mare Midnight Gold (NZ), who is out of a three-quarter sister to the former champion sprinter, multiple Group 1 winner and champion sire Exceed And Excel and a half-sister to the stakes winner Enemy Of Average (Fusaichi Pegasus {USA}). International Group-winning form is added to the pedigree by Stylish Senor (USA) (El Gran Senor {USA}).
Goulburn, Race 4, 1.45pm AEST, Electel Services Mdn, $20,000, 1000m
Seberton (Sebring) is the first foal of the winning Testa Rossa mare Alberton Waltz, who is from a family that boasts plenty of class and speed. The dam is a half-sister to the G3 Thoroughbred Club S. winner Cavalry Rose (Charge Forward).
The pedigree also features the G1 Doncaster H. winner and sire Brutal (NZ), his stakes-winning sister Talaria (NZ) and the Listed Takeover Target S. winner Testarhythm (Testa Rossa). The lightly-tried Seberton is returning from a spell and a recent trial placing indicated the 3-year-old is ready to go close.
Bet365 Geelong, Race 1, 12.30pm AEST, Bet365 Odds Drift Protector 2YO Mdn, $31,500, 1250m
Baheera (Pride Of Dubai) drew an outside gate on debut on this course last month and fought on well enough for sixth. She is sure to benefit fitness-wise and mentally from the experience and from a better draw won’t have to work so hard early. She’s capable of showing significant improvement.
Trained by Tony and Calvin McEvoy, Baheera is the first foal of the two-time Group 2 winner and Group 1 performer Badawiya (Al Maher), who is a half-sister to Rumya (NZ) (Red Ransom {USA}), a dual Group 1 winner in South Africa. The pedigree also features the G3 Paris S. winner and sire Rageese.
