Weight worry

Danny O'Brien's only concern with his Listed Midfield Group Wangoom H., contender Order Of Command (Squamosa) is the weight.

The trainer said the 5-year-old was in top shape for Wednesday’s Warrnambool meeting and would get conditions to suit.

Danny O'Brien

"You can pretty much rely on Warrnambool being rain-affected and we were looking to run him in a nice race on rain-affected ground. The first-up run was a bonus. We got the rain that day as well.

"He prefers that soft six or soft seven which it should be. The question is whether he can carry the 62 kilos."

McLaren to Riverdene

Group winning 2-year-old McLaren has been retired and will stand at Riverdene Stud in 2020.

Trained by Peter and Paul Snowden, the son of Exceed And Excel was an impressive debut winner of the G3 Canonbury S. in his first appearance before finishing fourth in the G2 Silver Slipper S.

He then ran third the G3 Black Opal S., but didn’t pull up 100 per cent and following two subsequent starts, time was called on his career.

McLaren was a $380,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale graduate and is out of the Encosta De Lago mare Serenada, a half-sister to the Group 2 winners First Command (Commands) and Oneworld (Danehill Dancer {Ire}).

From the family of the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner River Dove (Hurricane Sky), McLaren will stand at $6600 inc GST.

Aethero to stay in HK

John Moore’s wish to bring Aethero (Sebring) back to Australia when he returns from Hong Kong at the end of the season to start training in Sydney has been dashed, for the meantime.

“He’ll stay in Hong Kong for now, but I impressed upon the owner that Australia is the place for him,” Moore told the South China Morning Post.

“The owner said let’s give him a few months in Hong Kong and if he does have a minor bleed then I will give you a call and he may come back.”

The winner of five of his nine starts, Aethero suffered a bleeding attack during the G1 Chairman’s Sprint Prize, in which he tailed the field home.

Double the prize

Listed Wagga Wagga Gold Cup House Of Cartier (NZ) (Alamosa {NZ}) will shoot for a stakes double when she runs in Saturday’s Listed Gosford Gold Cup.

Trainer John Sargent has confirmed his intention to run the mare on an eight-day back-up.

"She has come through her win in great order so it's all systems go," he said. "She did it very nicely at Wagga. She likes the sting out of the track which she got. When she got to the front she was a bit lost with the blinkers on.

"I think she's probably better with something to chase, but she was doing it nice and easy so I was very happy with her.”

Strength in numbers

Godolphin stable has nominated nine horses for Brisbane’s premier sprint, the G1 Stradbroke H.

The Stradbroke and JJ Atkins on June 6 are the only two Group 1 races to be run in a revamped winter carnival caused by coronavirus restrictions.

Godolphin has nominated last year's winner Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}), Deprive (Denman), Phaistos (Helmet), Kementari (Lonhro), Best Of Days (GB) (Azamour {Ire}), Exhilarates (Snitzel), Haunted (Lonhro), Ranier (Lonhro) and Savatiano (Street Cry {Ire}).

The majority of the top Australian stables including Chris Waller, Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott, Peter and Paul Snowden, Bjorn Baker and John Thompson have entries among the 100 nominations.

Group 1 winners Santa Ana Lane (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and Sunlight (Zoustar) are also among the entries.

Star shining again

A smart trial win at the Sunshine Coast on Tuesday has Star Of Michelin (Jet Spur) cleared to continue his winter campaign after recovering from a second episode of cardiac arrhythmia.

Star Of Michelin was a dashing winner at Eagle Farm in late March, but then finished a long last in a Doomben benchmark race at his next start.

“They have done all of the tests and he has been cleared of damage," trainer Stuart Kendrick said. “We trialled him and he won easily and passed the vet's test.

"He can run in the QTIS 3-year-old race at the Sunshine Coast on Friday week. It is a metropolitan meeting and the distance of the race is 1400 metres so he is suited."

Favourite draws wide

Pre-post favourite Dalasan (Dalakhani {Ire}) will have 13 opponents in the way of success in the G1 South Australian Derby at Morphettville.

Trained by Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas, the colt has drawn barrier nine in Saturday's 2500 metre feature, in which he will be ridden by Jason Holder.

The G1 Victoria Derby winner Warning (Declaration Of War {USA}) has drawn barrier three and will be ridden by last week's G1 Australasian Oaks-winning jockey Damien Thornton. Russian Camelot (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), from the Danny O'Brien stable has drawn seven.

Chris Waller will chase a second Group 1 Adelaide victory after Toffee Tongue's (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) Australasian Oaks win last week and will be represented by Miyake (Deep Impact {Jpn}), who has drawn the widest gate.

Inquiry to resume

Brisbane jockey Baylee Nothdurft will front the resumption of an inquiry into his handling of Vega One (Lope De Vega {Ire}) at the Sunshine Coast.

They finished fourth in an open handicap after coming from last on the home turn and stewards took evidence before adjourning the inquiry to examine betting records and will continue the hearing on Thursday.

Nothdurft, who currently leads the metropolitan and state in senior and apprentice premierships, missed last Saturday after serving a seven-day suspension for excessive use of the whip.
