Tarzino (NZ) continues to grow in favour with breeders who have flocked to the multiple Group 1 winner since his retirement to Westbury Stud and his first representatives will be showcased later this month.

New Zealand Bloodstock’s May Sale at Karaka on the 17th will feature a number of Tarzino’s first crop as it will his associate sire Telperion, with Westbury Stud more than satisfied with the early impact the duo has made.

Tarzino raced up to his rich pedigree for Caulfield trainer Mick Price with four wins from his 14 starts, including a brace at Group 1 level in the Rosehill Guineas and the VRC Derby and was a close second in the Australian Guineas.

“When you look back at Tarzino’s race record, his Rosehill Guineas win was probably his stand-out race when he beat Beauty Generation and Jameka,” Westbury Stud General Manager Russell Warwick said.

“He probably couldn’t have beaten two better 2000 metre horses than those two in that era. That shows how good he was.”

“He probably couldn’t have beaten two better 2000 metre horses than those two in that era.” – Russell Warwick.

The red carpet has been rolled out for Tarzino since his retirement and the size and quality of his first two books has been impressive.

Impressive books

“He served 124 mares in his first year and 133 last year,” Warwick said.

In his second season, Tarzino was the third most popular stallion in New Zealand behind Almanzor (Fr) and Savabeel.

"I think that’s down to a couple of things. One that he is the type of stallion that New Zealand breeders want to breed to and know the Australian market will buy them,” Warwick said.

“He had a turn of foot and he’s leaving impressive looking foals.” – Russell Warwick.

“He raced exclusively in Australia and he was a multiple Group 1 winner and went within a nose of another one in the Australian Guineas.

Tarzino

“He had a turn of foot and he’s leaving impressive looking foals. You also need to get the right mares and fortunately Tarzino has had them, there are a lot of well-bred mares in foal to him or have foals at foot by him.

“The feedback across the board that we’ve had on the Tarzino foals has been really good. A lot of the bigger studs have got shares in Tarzino and they are really happy and we’ve got some super foals here.

“We’ll be spreading them around and they will go to Karaka in January and some will go to the Magic Millions.”

Telperion's sales debut

Among Telperion’s representatives to be at offered at the sale is Westbury Stud's Lot 137.

“He’s a smart colt out of Cattledog, he’s a lovely animal,” Warwick said.

He is out an unraced daughter of Encosta de Lago from the family of the G2 Reisling Slipper S. winner and G1 Golden Slipper runner-up Frolic (Husson {Arg}).

“Telperion served 118 last year and he’s got a good number of foals out there now,” Warwick said.

“We probably pulled off a bit of a coup with Telperion because we bought into him before Kementari came up.” - Russell Warwick.

Street Cry’s (Ire) son Telperion only raced on six occasions and won the Listed Lonhro Plate, finished runner-up in the G1 ATC Sires Produce S. and was fourth in the G1 Golden Slipper S.

Telperion

“We probably pulled off a bit of a coup with Telperion because we bought into him before Kementari came up,” Warwick said.

“Godolphin still owns 50 per cent of the horse so we’re lucky to be in a horse like him. Kementari has been very popular with his bookings the first year over there standing at $33,000 including GST.

“Smaller breeders are getting some really good value for money with Telperion.”

Telperion and Kementari (Lonhro) are out of the Redoute’s Choice mare Yavanna and the family of the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen winner Sterling City (Nadeem).

“We’ve got a half-brother to go through the sales to Ho Ho Khan, who won a Group 3 in Hong Kong at the weekend,” Warwick said. “He’s a $5000 stallion and he’s been very well mated.”

Featured lots

Westbury’s weanling draft will also feature three colts by El Roca – Lot 6 is out of a three-quarter sister to the G1 Toorak H, winner Solzhenitsyn (NZ) (St Petersburg ), Lot 10 is a half-brother to the G3 Concorde H. winner Mosse (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) and Lot 90 is a half-brother to the G1 New Zealand 1000 Guineas winner La Bella Diosa (NZ) (So You Think {NZ}).

The Karaka farm will also offer Lot 14, a son of the G1 Golden Slipper S. winner Vancouver and the first foal of High Hostess (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}), who sold for $200,000 at the Inglis Australian Broodmare Sale in Sydney on Monday.

“If we can pull off a Classic with him in Australia it will be a fantastic season for him.” – Russell Warwick.

“We’re in a good spot at the moment with Reliable Man, Redwood, Swiss Ace and El Roca, the four stallions that have got runners and they’re all going well,” Warwick said.

Reliable Man

“Reliable Man has a horse in the Derby in South Australia on Saturday, two going for the Derby in Queensland, a filly for the Oaks and he’s already won the New Zealand Oaks.

“If we can pull off a Classic with him in Australia it will be a fantastic season for him.”

Reliable Man’s daughter Sentimental Miss (NZ) won the G1 New Zealand Oaks at Trentham, Grinzinger Star (NZ) takes on the G1 South Australian Derby this weekend and could also head to the G1 Queensland Derby, along with Nobu (NZ) while Duchess Of Lennox (NZ) is on a path to the G1 Queensland Oaks.
