First crops highlight Karaka May Sale

Foals from the first crops of Preferment (NZ), Belardo (Ire), Turn Me Loose (NZ), Tarzino (NZ), Vadamos (Fr), Telperion, Puccini (NZ), Tivaci, Rageese, Vanbrugh and Flying Artie feature as part of the 154 weanlings on offer at New Zealand Bloodstock’s Karaka May Sale to be held on May 17.

The sale includes weanlings, yearlings, unraced 2-year-olds, racing stock and breeding stock with 240 horses catalogued.

Of the weanlings Lot 48, a Tivaci colt offered by Curraghmore, and Lot 76, a Turn Me Loose colt on account of Brighthill Farm, both descend from Habibti (Ire) (Habitat {USA})) who is a half-sister to the legendary Eight Carat (GB) (Pieces of Eight {Ire}), the most influential broodmare in New Zealand thoroughbred history. It is also the family of Group 1 winner Humidor (Teofilo {Ire}).

Lots 48 and 76 are from the family of G1 winner Humidor

Lot 34, by Haunui Farm's Belardo (Ire) and Lot 94 by the French Group 1 winner Vadamos, who stands at Rich Hill, both hail from the family of Jon Snow (NZ) (Iffraaj {GB}) and will be two of the 18 weanlings offered by Haunui Farm.

Lot 90 is an El Roca colt bred by the Dennis brothers, who have had recent success with the win of The Chosen One (NZ) (Savabeel) in the G3 Frank Packer Plate at Randwick.

Out of Star Affair (NZ) (Star Way {GB}), the colt is a half brother to Group 1 New Zealand One Thousand Guineas winner La Bella Diosa (NZ) (So You Think).

The Broodmare Session features 60 breeding prospects, including Lot 234, Belle Fleur (NZ) (Danzero), the half-sister to stakes-winner Annie Higgins (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) and granddaughter of New Zealand Filly of the Year Tri Belle (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}). She is in foal to Proisir.

Pencarrow Stud offer five members of the family of outstanding race mare Riverina Charm (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}).

They include Fontelina (NZ) (Pins) served by Burgundy (NZ) (Lot 183), Philosophical (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}) served by Ocean Park (Lot 207), Promises (NZ) (Keeper) served by Burgundy (NZ) (Lot 211), Skywards (NZ) (O’Reilly {NZ}) served by Vadamos (Fr) (Lot 219) and Stargazing (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle) served by Burgundy (NZ) (Lot 223).

Among Pencarrow's other eight broodmare offerings is Pomellato (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}). Lot 209, who is in foal to Mongolian Khan. She is a four-time winner out of Diamond Habit (GB) (Green Desert {USA}), a daughter of the aforementioned Habibti (Ire).

There are also 18 yearlings on offer, three unraced 2-year-olds and five racehorses, two of which are by champion sire Savabeel.
