Looking Ahead - April 13

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

On Saturday, we believe a step up in distance will be ideal for a colt at Randwick and like the chances of an unbeaten youngster at the meeting while at Caulfield a 2-year-old is poised to stay undefeated following a smart debut win.

Randwick Race 1, 11.25am, Listed King of Sydney Sports Mile, $150,000, 1600m

Extraordinary (Redoute’s Choice) can live up to his name here for trainers Peter and Paul Snowden over the extended trip. The colt stayed on well enough from a wide draw for sixth on debut last month and he looks well-equipped to be more competitive over a mile.

An $800,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions purchase for James Harron, Extraordinary is a half-brother to two winners with their dam Assertin Miss (Zabeel {NZ}) a sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and sire Reset and the G3 Chairman’s H. winner So Assertive. It’s also the family of the former champion Australian 2-year-old Assertive Lad (Zeditave).

Randwick Race 2, 12.05pm, Listed The Agency South Pacific Classic, $150,000, 1400m

Millard Reaction (Fastnet Rock) is facing a sharp rise in class, but the 3-year-old has a pedigree to instil confidence that he is up to the task. He is a half-brother to the G1 Oakleigh Plate winner Mrs Onassis (General Nediym) and the G3 winners Miss Judgement (Strategic), Fifth Avenue Lady (Encosta de Lago) and Aussies Love Sport (Redoute’s Choice). Their grand-dam Lady Jakeo (Last Tycoon {Ire}) was the dual Group 1 winner of the Blue Diamond S. and the Australia S.

Trained by Toby Edmonds, Millard Reaction was untested to win on debut and followed up with another smart performance to score at Doomben. While they were against inferior opposition, he has plenty of scope for improvement and is drawn perfectly in barrier three.

Caulfield Race 1, 12.20, Em Jensen Funerals H, $125,000, 1200m

Super Seth (Dundeel {NZ}) was bought for $280,000 at the Inglis Easter Yearling Sale and is a half-brother to the Listed Poseidon S. winner and Group performer Wild Planet (Animal Kingdom {USA}). Their dam Salutations (Redoute’s Choice) is a daughter of Toast Of The Coast (Rory’s Jester), who won five races including the G2 Yallambee Classic and the Listed Birthday Card S.

Trainer Anthony Freedman produced Super Seth for the first time at Ballarat and the colt came from the outside gate to justify his short odds in fine style. He can only have improved with the experience and the 2-year-old looks a strong chance to keep his unbeaten record intact.
