Rosehill Preview: Waller’s mare looks a serious Coolmore player

6 min read

Rosehill G1 Coolmore Classic, $600,000, 1500m

I Am Serious (Choisir) gave a good account of herself when a resuming second in the G2 Millie Fox S. and with improvement from that she can rise to the toughest challenge of her career.

The Chris Waller-trained mare will need a little luck from a tricky draw, but if things go her way early she should be in the fight. Ron Quinton has a pair of good chances with Daysee Doom (Domesday) and Dixie Blossoms (Street Sense {USA}) and both will have benefitted from their first-up appearances.

Alassio (Foxwedge) has arrived at this level after a fine run of form through the lower grades while White Moss (Mossman) is genuine and the front-runner will give a fine sight.

El Dorado Dreaming (Ilovethiscity) is steadily improving and the step up to 1500 metres is ideal for the late closer. Stablemates Princess Posh (Canford Cliffs {Ire}) and Invincible Gem (I Am Invincible) give trainer Kris Lees a more than decent shot at the big prize.

Aloisia (NZ) (Azamour {Ire}) wasn’t sighted when she returned in the G2 Apollo S. but she is a second-up winner and if there is an easing of the track the last-start G3 Mannerism S. winner Jamaican Rain (Manhattan Rain) will come right into favour.

Kiwi filly a major player

Rosehill G2 Harrolds Magic Night S., $175,000, 1200m

Probabeel (NZ) (Savabeel) has a wide gate, but she tends to get back in her races so it shouldn’t prove a major concern for the impressive Karaka Million winner.

She is a recent trial winner and looks sure to give a bold account of herself in her Australian debut. Lankan Star (Nicconi) belied her long odds when runner-up in the G1 Blue Diamond S. and that’s a form line to be taken seriously.

Athiri (Lonhro) was the beaten favourite in the Blue Diamond, but her run for fourth still held plenty of merit and stablemate Kiamichi (Sidestep) is expected to be improved for her resuming fourth in the G2 Sweet Embrace S.

Villami (Foxwedge) and Invincible Lotus (I Am Invincible) both won their debuts impressively and from their inside gates can make an impression.

A star on the rise

Rosehill G2 Hyland Race Colours Ajax S., $200,000, 1500m

Fifty Stars (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) has an excellent winning strike rate and an eighth win from just 12 appearances beckons.

He stepped up to a mile last time out and decisively put away his rivals in the G2 Blamey S. and from an ideal draw will have every opportunity to produce a repeat performance.

Dreamforce (Fastnet Rock) also comes here at the top of his game following a victory in the G3 Liverpool City Cup and will be a worthy opponent. Land Of Plenty (Stratum) is a major talent and third-up he should now be at peak fitness.

Dyslexic (Foxwedge) appeals as a strong chance at longer odds following her handy effort for fourth off a break in the G2 Guy Walter S. The progressive Seaway (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) is unbeaten this preparation and another dangerous lighter-weighted contender.

Elegant filly a top hope

Rosehill G2 Chandon Phar Lap S., $200,000, 1500m

Verry Elleegant (NZ) (Zed {NZ}) impressed in the spring and she showed she had come back well with a strong run for second when resuming in the G3 The Vanity.

The move up to 1500 metres will be ideal for her and the versatile filly won’t be troubled if there is an easing of the underfoot conditions. Qafila (Not A Single Doubt) will be a worthy adversary following her stylish victory in the G2 Angus Armanasco S.

Rock (Pierro) has looked good in the lower grades and can measure up while Seabrook (Hinchinbrook) is talented, but unpredictable. If she brings her A-game she will be a major threat.

Mizzy (Zoustar) and Blast (Dalakhani {Ire) give Anthony Cummings a decent hand with both racing well and the former is proven in stakes company.

Cosmic a force to be reckoned with

Rosehill G3 Bowermans Office Pago Pago S., $175,000, 1200m

Cosmic Force (Deep Field) is racing well with consecutive black type placings and gave the G1 Golden Slipper contender Microphone (Exceed And Excel) a run for his money when second in the G2 Skyline S.

He spearheads an all-out assault on the race by Team Snowden, who also line up Hightail (Written Tycoon), Stronger (Not A Single Doubt), Autocratic (Wandjina) and first-timer Famous (Medaglia D’Oro {USA}).

Expensive yearling Faretti (I Am Invincible) couldn’t deliver on debut, but will surely benefit from the race day experience while Yulong Savings (Helmet) closed well last time out for second and looks an each-way hope.

Born A Warrior (I Am Invincible) made an encouraging debut when third in the G2 Silver Slipper S. and had trialled well beforehand. Lubuk (I Am Invincible) was below par last time out and her previous effort for second behind the smart Exhilarates (Snitzel) might be the better guide.

Stayer ready to fire up

Rosehill G3 Schweppes Sky High S., $350,000, 2000m

Patrick Erin (NZ) (Gallant Guru) has turned in two more than respectable efforts to open his preparation. He has been racing at distances well short of his best and, while that’s the case again, he can be effective third-up at this trip.

Samadoubt (Not A Single Doubt) is in career best form and his defeat of a handy line-up in the Listed Canberra Cup last time out puts him in the frame here.

Don’t be surprised by a much improved effort from Brimham Rocks (GB) (Fastnet Rock) now he’s extended in distance and Red Cardinal (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) was a surprise winner of the Listed Parramatta Cup. He was first-up in that and natural improvement should see him competitive again.

Trekking a strong first-up hope

Randwick G3 Canadian Club Maurice McCarten S., $160,000, 1100m

Trekking (Street Cry {Ire}) hasn’t been seen since the spring, but the 4-year-old has trialled well for James Cummings and has won twice before in a fresh state.

Millionaire sprinter Music Magnate (NZ) (Written Tycoon) is also a recognised first-up performer who has trialled twice ahead of his return. She Knows (Denman) is tough and genuine with a smart record at this distance.

Easy Eddie (Super Easy) is a progressive type with three of his seven wins posted at this trip while Junglized (Snitzel) is racing well and a touch of luck from his wide gate could see him play a role in the finish.
