A Group 1 result for Novara Park at Trentham on Saturday will have far-reaching and invaluable repercussions for a number of residents of Luigi Muollo’s Cambridge nursery.

The farm will be represented in the G1 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai New Zealand Oaks by the home-bred and in-form pair of Jakkalbomb (NZ) and Dare To Compare (NZ), both daughters of the ill-fated Jakkalberry (Ire).

The G1 Gran Premio Di Milano winner and G1 Melbourne Cup placegetter became Novara Park’s foundation stallion when he retired in 2014, but tragically passed away in February, 2018 after contracting a gut infection.

The ill-fated Jakkalberry

“Only one stallion’s got more in the field on Saturday and that’s Savabeel so we’re not doing too badly are we,” Muollo said.

“We’re quite excited about both fillies and we definitely think they will run a good 2400 metres.”

Jakkalberry’s best daughter to date is Jakkalbomb, a genuine 3-year-old who has a win and four placings for trainer Janelle Millar.

She was runner-up in the G3 Desert Gold S., third in the Listed Oaks Prelude and fourth last time out in the G2 Lowland S.

“We sold her as a weanling. She’s out of Explosive Girl and we’ve got nine mares on the property that are all related to Jakkalbomb, Vin De Dance and also Pick Number One,” said Muollo, who stands Sweynesse at Novara Park.

“Pick Number One was the champion 3-year-old in Hong Kong in 2018. It’s all made a massive difference to those nine mares.”

“I’ve got five half-sisters to Explosive Girl at home and they’re all out of my foundation mare Explosive.” - Luigi Muollo.

Jakkalbomb is out of Explosive Girl (NZ) (San Luis), who is a sister to Explosive Dancer, the dam of the G1 New Zealand Derby winner Vin De Dance (NZ) (Roc De Cambes {NZ}) and a half-sister to Extra Explosive (NZ) (Ekraar {USA}), who produced Pick Number One (NZ) (Darci Brahma {NZ}).

“I’ve got five half-sisters to Explosive Girl at home and they’re all out of my foundation mare Explosive,” Muollo said.

“Since Jakkalbomb, Explosive Girl slipped and missed two years in a row. Then she was in foal and I gave the mare to a client who had paid a service fee. Their mare had slipped to Jakkalberry.”

Dare To Compare is trained by Robert Priscott and she has won twice from eight appearances, including a last-start defeat of the older horses over 2100 metres.

“We own the mother Beyond Comparison and I lease this filly out, but with no right of purchase,” Muollo said.

“Beyond Comparison had a full sister and was bought at the Karaka yearling sale by one of New Zealand’s best judges last year – Chris Rutten.”

Among Rutten’s success stories are the G1 Sistema S. and G3 Waikato Stud Slipper winner Yourdeel (NZ) (Dundeel {High Chaparral {Ire}) and the Karaka Million 3YO Classic and G2 Wellington Guineas winner Scott Base (NZ) (Dalghar {Fr}).

A NZ$50,000 purchase, Beyond Comparison's daughter Nothing Compares (NZ) made her debut at Matamata on Wednesday, but was unplaced after receiving a chequered passage.

“Beyond Comparison had a Sweynesse filly who was going to the yearling sales, but she broke a leg in a paddock, which was devastating,” Muollo said.

“She’s got a Sweynesse colt at foot and she’s in foal to Zacinto.”

Beyond Comparison (Mossman) is out of the Group 2 performer Authoress (Fuji Kiseki {Jpn}), who is a half-sister to the stakes winners Etymology (New Approach {Ire}), also runner-up in the G1 Victoria Derby and the G1 South Australian Derby, Whitlam (Elusive Quality {USA}) and Dirty (Hussonet {USA}).
