Race Summary :

Surprise Baby (NZ) (Shocking) produced an impressive staying performance to win this at just his sixth appearance.

It was his fourth race victory and he’s progressed from a Horsham maiden success in the spring to a Group 2 victory.

Surprise Baby improved from midfield with 800 metres to run and once he bounded to the lead at the 200 it was game, set and match. Top Of The Range (NZ) (Savabeel) took second money and Naval Warfare (Ire) (Born To Sea {Ire}) was third.

Surprise Baby is out of Bula Baby (NZ) (Kaapstad {NZ}) and she won a couple of modest races in the South Island.

She is a daughter of the G2 Sedgwick Classic winner Miss Tessla (NZ) (Crested Wave {USA}) and is a half-sister to the black type performer Mi Casa Su Casa (NZ) (Zabeel {NZ}).

It is also the family of the G3 Champagne S. winner and Group 1 placegetter Antarctic Miss (NZ) (Ustinov).

Race Summary :

Snitzkraft (Snitzel) survived a protest from the runner-up to claim victory under rider John Allen and complete a stakes double.

He made the running and drifted out onto challenger Waging War (Rebel Raider), who had headed Snitzkraft but couldn’t maintain his effort and had to settle for second.

The race was also marred by a nasty fall, but jockeys involved Dean Yendall, Emily Finnegan and Kayla Crowther all escaped an injuries.

Snitzkraft’s dam Power O’Raylee (O’Reilly) won five times and she is a daughter of the multiple winner and Listed performer La Banca (NZ) (Grosvenor).

She is also the dam of the Listed Ray Coupland S. winner Moveovr (NZ) (Postponed {USA}) with a headline act on the pedigree page is the former New Zealand Horse of the Year Uncle Remus (NZ) (Bandmaster II {Ire}).

Race Summary :

Imported galloper Mantastic (Ire) (Fastnet Rock) produced a sustained finish from the back to open his black type account.

Now with Chris Waller, after doing his early Australian racing with Darren Weir, the lightly-tried 5-year-old was slow to jump and settled at the tail of the field.

When rider Corey Brown asked the question Mantastic responded and powered home to beat Silentz (Snitzel) and A Shin Rook (Jpn) (Heart’s Cry {Jpn}).

Mantastic is a son of Foreign Legionary (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a half-sister to the former champion Irish mare and five-time Group 1 winner Alexander Goldrun (Ire) (Gold Away {Ire}).
