Playing it Safe
Safeguard, who is currently fourth on the Australian first-season sires list with two winners from his first crop, was the in-demand sire at Swan Valley and was the leading stallion on average and aggregate in Book 2.
The buzz on the son of Group 3 winning son of Exceed and Excel was strong on Day 1, where he sold six lots from an average of $86,666 and he backed that up on Tuesday with the four lots sold at an average of $52,000.
Lot 190, a filly consigned by Namerik Thoroughbreds went to Paul Jordan, who paid the top price for a Safeguard in Book 1 (Lot 90) as well.
Jordan paid $60,000 for the filly out of Comme Ci (Verglas) who is a half sister to recent WA winners Barry's Rabbit (Blackfriars) and Fred Dag (Patronize). It is the family of stakes-winners Zedamoss, Andra, Moving Money and Stratazoa.
Jordan would buy three lots on the day to go with the two he purchased in Book 1.
Simon Miller Racing went $55,000 for Lot 260, a filly out of Perpendicular (Charge Forward), which was offered by Mogumber Park. Perpendicular is the half-sister to the dam of Exosphere and has already produced a couple of winners in Scalpel (Snippetson) and Shengmu (Fath {USA}).
Pearce Racing, who bought the top lot overall in Book 1, paid $50,000 for Safeguard's Lot 181, a filly out of Cause For Demand (Giant's Causeway {USA}). That filly is a half to Vixatious (Foxwedge), while the dam is a sibling to four stakes winners, including Group 2 winner Washington Heights (Commands).
Lot 235 was the other Safeguard to go for $50,000, with the colt out of stakes-placed Jeverre (Noverre {USA}) sold to Jim Taylor.
The penultimate lot of the sale, a colt by Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente (Ire), was the only other lot to reach $50,000. The 14th foal from Windana (Danehill {USA}) who has produced five winners, the colt hails from the family of Group 1 winner Southern Lord and went to Jason Ferguson.
Big sale for Mogumber Park
While the market wasn't overly strong across the board, it was a great couple of days for Mogumber Park, with owner Colin Brown delighted with how the sale worked out for Safeguard.
"Really, really happy. Every time we’ve asked the horse to do something, he's done it. He came across, he got his mares in foal, they all came out correct, they all behave well and the trainers love them," Brown told The Races WA.
"He came across, he got his mares in foal, they all came out correct, they all behave well and the trainers love them." - Mogumber Park owner, Colin Brown
"He's still fourth on the Australian first season sires list, he's done a great job. The people who have come and got them this year and got them in the stable last year. Richard Jolly came over from South Australia to buy one, because he's got one already."
"He does stamp them doesn't he. You see that really strong hindquarter, that good shoulder in them. The one thing that amazed us during their prep is that they are a horse that loves routine."
Mogumber Park sold three of the five Safeguards on the day to finish clearly the top vendor on average on the day, while Mungrup Stud sold 13 yearlings to lead the aggregate sales with $333,000
The top buyer on the day was bloodstock agent John Chalmers, who spent $102,000 in buying five yearlings.
Across the two books, the clearance rate was 74.29%, with an average of $44,651, a median of $32,500 and aggregate of $9.287m.
Last year, the overall clearance was 91.76%, the average $45,547, the median $35,000 and the aggregate $11.66m.
