Group 3 Hobart Cup, Hobart

Race Summary:

Eastender (Tickets) delivered a memorable G3 TAB Hobart Cup victory for Star Thoroughbreds, profiting from a brilliant ride by Craig Newitt to clam the $250,000 feature.

Reward for much of the race, Newitt cut the corner as the field swung wide and charged through to beat Lamborghini (NZ) (Shinko King {Ire} with Appmat (Matsqui) holding on for third.

It was a ninth win for the 5-year-old but his first at stakes level, with plans afoot to head to the G3 Launceston Cup later this month before a tilt at the G2 Adelaide Cup.

It is the second Group win for trainer Barry Campbell, but his first in nearly 16 years, while it is Newitt's third win in the race.

Pedigree Notes:

Eastender, a $22,000 buy at the 2015 Tasmanian Yearling Sale, becomes the first stakes winner for his sire Tickets.

His dam, Cougar Alley (Mossman) was unraced but is a three quarter sister to Pure Energy (Mossman) and Segments (Mossman), who were both stakes-winning 2-year-olds. Their grand dam was the G1 NZ 1000 Guineas winner Our Cure (NZ) (Sir Tristram {Ire}).

She is out of White Gold (NZ) (Colombia {NZ}), who has produced city winner Leodoro (Jayemzed) as well as the winner Gold Phoenix. She is a sister to stakes-placed Oronero (Colombia). Further back, the fourth dam, Lanna D'Oro, is a half-sister to Eight Carat.

Listed Strutt S., Hobart

Rock Dove (Epaulette) completed a weekend Tasmanian stakes double for Godolphin and James Cummings by comfortably winning the Listed StrathAyr Strutt S. at Hobart.

After Cossetot’s (Epaulette) win in Friday’s Tasmanian Derby, the filly followed suit, coming from off the pace and sweeping wide to beat the favoured runner Our Long Sali (Needs Further) by 1.5l with Victorian visitor True Magic (Pierro) in third.

Rock Dove’s first black type win comes at her ninth start with her only previous victory coming in a Cranbourne maiden.

She becomes the fifth stakes winner for her sire and is now likely to contest the Listed Tasmanian Oaks in February 24.

Pedigree Notes:

Rock Dove is out of the Dubawi {Ire}) mare Pouter, who has produced three other winners as well as Lot 609 (by Brazen Beau) at this week's Inglis Classic Sale.

Pouter is a half-sister to stakes-winner Excelltastic (Exceed and Excel), with the extended family including American stakes-winning trio Absent Friend, Fateful Dream and Dreams Galore.
