Pedigree Boosters - Karaka

3 min read

In the build up to the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka, we will pick out three yearlings each day who have had substantial pedigree updates in the past couple of months.

Today, we look at a relative of Te Akau Shark up for auction as well as a filly related to a recent winner in Singapore and a colt connected to Group 1-winning 3-year-old, Madison County.

Lot 69 - Rip Van Winkle (Ire) x Half Bak (NZ) - Offered by Leanach Lodge

Super talented Te Akau Shark (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {Ire}) looks set to be sidelined until the spring, but those anticipating him taking on Australia's best in the autumn can at least console themselves with a look at his close relative here in a colt by the same sire out of his half-sister Half Bak (NZ) (Churchill Downs). They are out of Group 2 winner Bak Da Chief (NZ) (Chief Bearheart {Can}).

Since the catalogue was finalised, Te Akau Shark romped to a five-length win in the G2 Couplands Bakeries Mile, adding a nice little update to a pedigree page that already contains the likes of Group 1 winner Pondarosa Miss (NZ) (High Chaparral {Ire}) and Listed winner Ecuador (High Chaparral {Ire}).

Lot 245 - Showcasing (GB) x My Other Woman - Offered by Haunui Farm

This colt is a full brother to the stakes-winning Singaporean galloper in Be Bee (NZ), who was the champion 2-year-old there in 2017. He has shown there is some longevity in the breed by winning first-up last week over 1200m, taking his record to six wins from 14 starts.

It is already a pedigree with plenty of quality, including the stakes-placed full-sister Platinum Express (NZ). The dam, My Other Woman, is out of champion filly Burst (Marauding), whose progeny have also left South African Group 3 winner Winter Burst and Australian G2 winner Eclair Choice.

Lot 625 - Sacred Falls (NZ) x Celebrate (NZ) - Offered by Waikato Stud

The colt's half-brother Pinzu (NZ) (Pins) added some black type to his resume when winning a Listed race in Perth in November. He is now the winner of eight races.

The other pedigree update comes through this colt's connection to Madison County (NZ), who has won two recent Group 1s in NZ. Both feature O'Really (NZ), the full-sister to O'Reilly (NZ), in their dam's lines, with Lot 625 out of a daughter of that mare and Madison County out of her granddaughter.
