Jamieson Park boosted broodmare band produces diverse draft

Proven sires and a thoughtful approach to matchings are part of a proven formula for Jamieson Park, and the beautiful Mangatawhiri farm boasts a draft that includes the only colt from in-demand sire I Am Invincible at Karaka

Diversity, from both sides of the breeding barn, is the key word when it comes to describing Jamieson Park's 14-horse draft for the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale from Sunday at Karaka.

Jamieson Park owner James Chapman and stud manager Sam Munro have not only gone to great lengths to maintain a strong broodmare band but also to ensure their draft contains a wide range of proven sires.

"We have focused on improving our broodmare band over the last few years," Munro said. "We have been very active at the broodmare sales around Australasia, trying to upgrade that broodmare band."

“We have around 25 mares and we try to send them to a wide range of stallions," Chapman added, with the draft containing the progeny of 11 different sires including the only son of red-hot sire I Am Invincible at the sale.

Lot 238 comes from a mating with young broodmare More Beautiful (More Than Ready {USA}), a full-sister to stakes winner Landing (More Than Ready {USA}) and half-sister to G1 WATC Derby winner Grand Journey (Good Journey {USA}), among others.

"He has a good attitude," Munro said. "He has plenty of energy, but he is a good eater and he is enjoying being out at the sales, it doesn’t faze him."

Sire strategy

"We have a breeding right to I Am Invincible and we have bought the mare with this type of yearling in mind," Munro added of Lot 238.

Chapman said the stud has a philosophy of supporting proven stallions but also taking the time to find the right match rather than looking for a commercial outcome.

"It’s about trying to find the right match. We are really thinking more about it." - James Chapman

"We have breeding rights in a number of stallions, but we try to pick the right mates for the right stallions. It’s about trying to find the right match. We are really thinking more about it."

Not your typical Tavistock

One of the stars of the Jamieson Park draft is a Tavistock (NZ)(Zabeel {NZ}) colt that carries his sire's sure-footed athleticism, but also plenty of size, coming from an Encosta De Lago (Fairy King {USA}) mare, Alluring Belle.

"He is a very strong colt, from a very strong family and that size comes through from the Encosta mare," Munro said.

Alluring Belle is a half-sister to Group 1 winner Mission Critical (Fantastic Light {USA}) and Group 2 winner Brilliant Light (Fantastic Light {USA}).

New broodmare acquisition and an in-form sire

One of Jamieson Park's big broodmare buys was former Tony Pike-trained mare Summer's Day (NZ)(Darci Brahma {NZ}), a Listed winner who was placed at Group 2 level.

Her first foal is Lot 446, an Australian-bred colt by Per Incanto (USA), a sire that has had a run of recent success with Shadows Cast in the G1 Thorndon Mile and Santa Monica in the G1 Railway.

"She was a filly we bought off the track, we raced her for a few starts and then we sent her to Per Incanto, a sire who has had those great results of late," Munro said. "This is her first foal and we really like him."

Future in mind for fillies

Jamieson Park's thoughtful approach also extends to providing potential pedigree-boosting updates for Lots.

"Buyers can be confident that their fillies will continue to get page updates into the future." - Sam Munro

"We want to keep sending our mares to proven stallions, these aren't just one-off sales," Munro said. "Buyers can be confident that their fillies will continue to get page updates into the future."

A case in point is Lot 331, an Australian-bred filly by So You Think (NZ) out of Rare Delight (Redoute's Choice).

"She is a filly that we bought out of the Magic Millions Broodmare Sale. Like a lot of our fillies, she is in foal to a good stallion and with a well-bred foal. She has a nice Lonhro colt at foot and she is in foal to Savabeel."
