Pedigree Boosters - Karaka

3 min read

In the build up to the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka, we will pick out three yearlings each day who have had substantial pedigree updates in the past couple of months.

Today, we look at a colt from the family of emerging Mick Price filly Oceanex (NZ), check out a colt whose half-sister was a recent Group 3 winner and a filly whose close relative keeps adding black type success to her pedigree.

Lot 168 - Savabeel x Legless (NZ) - Offered by Milan Park

The dam of this colt, Legless (NZ) (O'Reilly {NZ}) already has a black-type winning sibling in Amexed (NZ), and may soon have another after the talented Oceanex (NZ) (Ocean Park {NZ}) made it three straight wins with a success over 2000m at Flemington last Saturday.

She looks an Oaks filly in the making having defied a variety of things against her to make it three wins from five starts. Another of Legless's half siblings Danahere (NZ) (Dehere {USA}) has produced the stakes-winner Saint Patrick's Day (Excelebration), who was recently runner-up in the Ballina Cup.

Lot 177 - Tavistock (NZ) x Love Diamonds - Offered by Cambridge Stud

Already from one of Australasia's best producing families, this colt got another update with his half-sister Queen of Diamonds (NZ) (Savabeel) winning the G3 Eulogy S. last month. She then followed that up with a third in the G2 Eight Carat S. on Boxing Day and lines up in Saturday's Karaka Million 3YO Classic.

The dam Love Diamonds (Danehill {USA}) is a sister to four stakes winners, including G1 Spring Champion S. winner Viking Ruler and is out of triple Group 1 winner Tristalove (NZ) (Sir Tristram {NZ}), the sister to Don Eduardo (NZ) and a myriad of other champion horses that hark back to the immortal Eight Carat {GB}).

Lot 283 - Power (GB) x Passion Cut (NZ) - Offered by Cambridge Stud

Gift of Power (Power {GB}) had already delivered black-type success to this filly's pedigree when the Karaka catalogue was announced but she added further stakes success when victorious in the Listed Levin S. at Otaki in late November. She's a winner of 10 of her 21 starts and is out of a sister to this filly's dam, being by the same sire.

The other family member doing his bit is Mongolian Marshal (NZ), the winner of the recent G3 Waikato Cup who was also placed in the G3 City of Auckland Cup. He also ties into the family of Lot 177 above.
