Looking Ahead - January 23

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we look at a pair of particularly well-related 3-year-olds making their second career appearances at Canterbury Park while at Ladbrokes Park we like the chances of a Shane Nicholls-trained filly who looked encouraging on debut.

A $390,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale buy, Emergent (Sebring) is a half-brother to the G2 Silver Slipper S. winner and Group 1 producing stallion Domesday (Red Ransom {USA}). Their dam In The Past (GB) (Zafonic {USA}) is a half-sister to the Listed French winner and Group 3 performer Victorian Order (GB) (Zamindar {USA}). They are out of Victoriana (USA) (Storm Bird {USA}) a half-sister to the multiple Group 1 winner and sire Xaar (GB) (Zafonic {USA}).

Emergent had trialled twice before a debut fourth at Randwick on Boxing Day for trainer John O’Shea. The colt is sure to be all the better for that race day experience and while he has drawn awkwardly, he does have James McDonald in the saddle.

Zelrosa (Snitzel) is a filly with a rich background and is a sister to the G1 Lightning H. winner Snitzerland and to the G3 Aurie’s Star H. winner Sooboog. Their mother Monte Rosa (Fraar {USA}) didn’t race and is a sister to the G3 Adelaide Guineas winner and multiple Group 1 placegetter Nina Haraka. She has also done a good job in the broodmare role and is the dam of the stakes winner Extensions Of Time (Dash For Cash).

Raced by Arrowfield Stud, Zelrosa was third at the only time of asking back in July at Gosford and following a break she has been a trial winner at Rosehill. From an inside draw she appeals as a top chance for trainer Gerald Ryan.

Gioconda (NZ) (Tavistock {NZ}) made a strong start to her career for Mornington conditioner Shane Nicholls when she finished runner-up at Cranbourne earlier this month. She has been given ample time to get over that run and in the hands of Michael Dee the filly can go one better.

She is a daughter of Glamorous Girl (NZ) (Thorn Park), who was a talented mare and won the G3 Desert Gold S. and finished second in the G2 Sir Tristram Fillies’ Classic. She has produced two winners and is a half-sister to the speedy So Elusive (NZ) (Elusive City {USA}), whose seven wins include the Listed Pegasus S. The family also includes the G3 Cambridge Breeders’ S. winner Geeza (NZ) (Ishiguru {USA}).
