Pedigree Boosters - Karaka

3 min read

In the build up to the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale at Karaka, we will pick out three yearlings each day who have had substantial pedigree updates in the past couple of months.

Today, we look at a filly related to recent Group 1 winner Surely Sacred, another filly from the family of recent G1 winner Santa Monica and a colt from a Western Australian family that can’t stop winning big races.

Lot 88 - Ocean Park (NZ) x Iffy (NZ) - Offered by Waikato Stud

This filly's dam's family already had some black-type but the recent success of Surely Sacred (NZ) (Rock 'n' Pop) has added a timely boost to the page. Surely Sacred is a half brother to the dam, Iffy (NZ), and has had three starts for two wins, including a last start win in the G2 Auckland Guineas at Ellerslie.

Trainer Tony Pike has G1 NZ Derby ambitions for the 3-year-old, who will likely run in the Karaka Million before the sale, possibly adding more value to this filly. Lot 92 is another one out of a sister to Surely Sacred, and being by the same sire, it makes them very closely related.

Lot 121 - Savabeel x Kashmir (NZ) - Offered by Waikato Stud

This filly already boasted black-type with three siblings of her dam, Kashmir (NZ) - Sharvasti (NZ), Shastri (NZ) and Bhandara (NZ), all Group winners. The fourth sibling, Modave (NZ) (Montjeu {Ire}), has had recent success with Perfect Match (Not A Single Doubt) who has won two recent races in Hong Kong, while another relative, Nicconi Express (Nicconi) has also tasted recent success in that part of the world.

But the bigger update came when Santa Monica (NZ) (Per Incanto {USA}) won the G1 Railway at Ellerslie. She is out of Balmacara (NZ), a half -sister to this filly's granddam Vedodara (NZ).

Lot 142 - Dissident x Lady Ashford - Offered by Ainsley Downs Stud

It's been a big couple of months for this colt's family, with several Group 1 updates from WA. His dam Lady Ashford (Royal Academy) has become one of the most influential producers for Bob Peters.

This colt's half sister Star Encounter (Jeune) has produced three stakes winners and one of them, Star Exhibit (Statue Of Liberty), recently added a second G2 Perth Cup to her record. Another half-sister, Favourite Star (More Than Ready), produced Enticing Star (Testa Rossa), who was runner-up in the G1 Winterbottom S., while a third sibling, Galaxy Queen (Jeune) was responsible for Galaxy Star (Redoute's Choice), who won the G1 Railway S. at Ascot in November.
