Looking Ahead - January 5

Today, we look at the prospects at Kensington of a 3-year-old having his first start for Chris Waller, a stablemate’s chances at Wyong and a smart juvenile who lines up at the Gold Coast meeting.

Botti (NZ) (Jakkalberry {IRE}) makes his first appearance for Chris Waller and a recent trial placing suggests he won’t be far off the mark. He was previously with Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman and was a winner for them at Geelong in the spring, but had little luck in two subsequent appearances.

The 3-year-old is a half-brother to five winners, including the ill-fated dual Group 1 winner Lion Tamer (NZ) (Storming Home {GB}) and the Group performer Let Me Roar (NZ) (Rip Van Winkle {IRE}). Botti is a grandson of Blue Denim (NZ) (A Chara {IRE}), who was successful three times at the elite level and the family of the G2 Tulloch S. winner Harris Tweed (NZ) (IRE}).

Trainer Chris Waller and the Kaha Syndicate went to NZ$260,000 to secure Construe (NZ) (Savabeel) at Karaka for this well-related filly. She is out of the Timber Country {USA}) mare Decipher and is a half-sister to Fontelina (Testa Rosa), who won two editions of the G2 Yellowglen S. and was twice Group 1 placed. The second dam Electrique (Zephyr) won the G1 Flight S. and the G1 Australia S.

Construe has had two runs this preparation and showed improvement to make late ground for a last-start fifth at Newcastle. The 3-year-old should now strip at peak and in a modest line-up she gets her chance to breakthrough.

From the inside gate Boomstress (Spirit Of Boom) has a gilt-edged opportunity to continue the fine start she has made to her career. The filly followed up her debut victory at the Sunshine Coast with a runner-up finish in the Listed Calaway Gal S at Doomben. With a number of the main threats drawing wide, she can capitalise on her ace barrier.

Boomstress was a $155,000 purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and is out of Pegasus Miss (More Than Ready {USA}), who won two modest events. She is a half-sister to the G3 Ming Dynasty H. winner Metallic Crown (Northern Meteor) and to Snitzepeg (Snitzel), winner of two Listed events.
