Looking Ahead - December 15

3 min read

Looking Ahead puts the spotlight on runners of interest across Australia and New Zealand. Whether they are a particularly well-bred or high-priced runner having their first or second start, a promising galloper returning to the track or a horse which has trialled particularly well, we’ll aim to give you something to follow.

Today, we have settled on a progressive 3-year-old to follow at Randwick and at Flemington we rate a well-bred debutante and a lightly-tried galloper in an age group event.

The lightly-tried Deprive (Denman) is a son of the Canny Lad (Bletchingly) mare Defrock and she is a sibling to the G3 Up And Coming S. winner Blackball and the second dam produced the three-time Group 2 winner Hosannah (Octagonal {NZ}), who was also Group 1 placed and she is the mother of the G2 Magic Night S. winner and G1 Goodwood H. placegetter Altar (Commands). The G2 Crystal Mile winner Holy Roller (Sanction) also appears on the pedigree page.

Deprive has won twice from five appearances and was third in his seasonal debut at Warwick Farm last month. He has been given ample time to get over that outing and with Hugh Bowman in the saddle again they look major players here.

Movie Role (Fastnet Rock) is out of Aspen Falls (Hennessy {USA}) and is a sister to the G1 Thousand Guineas and G3 Thousand Guineas Prelude winner Irish Lights, the mother of the G2 Silver Shadow S. winner Omei Sword (High Chaparral {IRE}). The dam is out of a half-sister to the G1Matron S. winner Fall Aspen (USA) (Pretense {USA}), who produced the champion colt Timber Country (USA) (Woodman {USA}), a multiple Group 1 winner and sire.

A $600,000 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale purchase for a Coolmore syndicate, Movie Role is trained by David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig. They haven’t trialled the 2-year-old, but it’s a safe bet such a valuable filly will be ready to go.

The Rodney Griffiths-prepared Piemonte (Fiorente {IRE}) comes from an international family that has already made a mark in Australia. The gelding is a son of Ellas (Canny Lad), who is out of a half-sister to the G3 Prix de Barbeville winner Magna Graecia (IRE) (Warning {GB}) and the G3 Prix de Conde winner Graikos (GB) (Rainbow Quest {USA}). The pedigree also features the multiple Group 1 winners and champion sires Street Cry (IRE) (Machaivellian {USA}) and Shamardal (USA) (Giant’s Causeway {USA}) and the G2 Australia S. winner Thronum (Snitzel).

Piemonte has made a bright start to his career and followed up a debut second at Mornington with a smart win at Sandown. This is a step up for him, but he looks more than capable of making a good impression.
